Unconventional

Competitions - Unconventional Sunday 18th October 2009

On Sunday the weather was superb lending the opportunity for our unconventional models to grace the skies. The overall winner was the incredibly realistic Pterodactyl designed, built and flown by Cyril. Phil’s flying Disco, built many years ago and now with a steering tail wheel,  was a strong second and Chris came third with his flying Mclaren M8F racing car. Chris lost points with a final crash, instead of a landing, surely a more realistic finish to any motor race! Shortest flight of the day goes to Glenn flying his Double Diamond, it didn’t work wonders and was probably one over the limit!  Our thanks go to Garry Garrott and Mike Cowley for judging the competition so diligently.

This is a fun competition that generates a lot of interest at the field. It is fascinating to watch these unusual shapes fly and, incredibly, they often appear to fly better than “conventional” aircraft! This “Unconventional” competition will be held again next year so why not start planning and building an unusual model for the 2010 event?

Competition Entrants displaying their concoctions while everything is still in one piece!

Glenn was looking to do one better than last year. Not in his standing in the final scores but seeing if he could take off and get his flying 'ACE' back to the patch in one piece.

There were intermittent faults with his engine (Never trust electric) but Glenn decided that in the spirit of the competition he would not disappoint and take to the skies.

Well it wasn't the motor that let him down (this was the second attempt to get airborne) it was an unexplained series of glitches.

However it did stay in control long enough to force an emergency landing or was it a cartwheel?
Glenn rushes over to see if their is any damage. Well a little but nothing that can't be mended and prevent a flight on another day.
